An antinuclear antibody (ANA) is an extraordinary form of antibody and is often seen in the blood. These antibodies are said to be binding with the cells of the body, particularly that of the nucleus. There is a tendency when the immune system goes against the usual functions of the body. This process is what we all call as autoimmunity.

What is the ANA test made for?
Before answering this question, let us take a look at how the antinuclear antibody test or ANA test evolved. Dr. George Friou was the proponent of this test. He designed it in order to help detect the presence of ANA in the blood.
The procedure is actually simple. First, a blood sample is taken from where the ANA may be detected. After which, it is placed in the laboratory for testing with subsequent exposure to cells. Due to the use of fluorescence as a technique, the test is also known as fluorescent antinuclear antibody test or FANA. The test is then used to determine autoimmune diseases.
What are autoimmune diseases?
Autoimmune diseases come after antibodies are abnormally produced in the body thus affecting the body’s tissues. It is commonly characterized by inflammation in the area where the disease is present. The most common examples of autoimmune diseases in the body include rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, pulmonary fibrosis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
The antinuclear antibodies may coincide with the existence of viral and bacterial infections in the body. They may also be predominant in conditions which involve the lungs, gastrointestinal portions, blood, cancers, skin and the hormones produced by the body. Since ANAs involvement in disorders of the hormones, thyroid disorders may also be a result.
The most common thyroid disorder detected in the ANA test aside from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the Graves’ disease. It is in this regard that the test is said to be a significant tool in detecting the presence of an autoimmune thyroid disorder such as these two categories. This is the reason why it is considered to form part of the thyroid problem diagnosis.
The ANA test is indeed important not only for the thyroid gland problems but for other problems encountered by the body. It pays to submit oneself to the exam in order to know whether an autoimmune disease is present in the body.
