Diagnosing Thyroid Problems Through Self-tests

Diagnosing thyroid problems are readily available through thyroid self-tests which may come in kits. Thyroid neck check may also be done in your home. Find out if there is still a need to go to your doctors after seeing the results of these tests.

Most of us – if not all- are afraid of going to the doctor for medical check-ups.  Some of us grow lazy about it and just leave our chances to where the future will take us.  Some of us are just "waiting for the right time" or until such time we think we need to visit our doctor.  When it comes to diagnosing thyroid problems, we are lucky enough that we have self-test options.

Self-tests for diagnosing thyroid problems come in a variety of forms.  What we will be happy about these things is the fact that we just have to stay at home and do the work.  However, this fact may lead us to several questions.  Are we competent enough to detect if we really have thyroid problems or not?

Self-tests for thyroid problems

Yes, we have the option to stay at home and check on ourselves.  Sometimes, our real attitude is that we are the ones feeling the discomfort so testing must really begin with out own act.  For self-tests for thyroid problems, the following options are available:

·         Neck Check.  This is also known as the thyroid neck check.  The neck check forms part of the physical examinations that your doctor does when you visit him for consultation on a probable thyroid disorder.  If you want to do this at home, you may do so.  All you need to have is a mirror and a glass of water and the test may be done.  Here are some of the steps behind the neck check:

1.     Hold the mirror right to an angle where you can see your neck or Adam’s apple.

2.     Drink a glass of water.

3.     While swallowing, check whether some lumps or a protruding mass is present in the neck area.

4.     If you are in doubt of the first try, you may always conduct the test for several times.

5.     If bulges or lumps are quite prevalent on the neck, you need to go to your doctor soon for proper assessment.

Take note however that the thyroid neck check you did in your home may not be the same as the neck check conducted by your doctor.  Since, he is an expert in the field more than you are, he may just feel the neck area for some lumps or nodules.

·         Thyroid self-test kits.  A lot of manufacturers have already diversified from delivering thyroid kits to medical establishments to rendering services for people at home.  You may order the kits from these manufacturers.  All you need to do is follow the instructions as indicated in the kit.  The self-test kits may include thyroid panels for T3 and T4, anti-thyroid antibodies, TSH, Reverse T3 and thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI).

To sum it all up – thyroid self-tests are good enough for you to know that you have a thyroid disorder.  However, even if you already know the result of this test, it still boils down to the fact that you need to go to your doctor.  With proper consultation and diagnosis for thyroid problems, you will be able to know how your disease may be treated.
