Causes Of Hypothyroidism: A Glance At Some Body Ailments Or Disorders

The causes of hypothyroidism come in different forms. Most often than not, the thyroid disorder is attributed to other diseases. Take a look at some of the most common culprits.

Sometimes, it is often hard to cope with thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism unless you know the real cause behind it.  True enough, it is attributable to the low productivity of thyroid hormones but this reason is not the only culprit to the disease.  In fact, there are certain body ailments or conditions that lead to the thyroid problem.

A disease leading to another is somewhat due to a lot of complications.  Once an existing medical condition is not addressed properly, there is an extreme possibility of developing another ailment.  This incidence happens to hypothyroidism.  While it may be a cause to other disorders, it may also be brought about by other conditions.

Hypothyroidism causes

The most common culprits to hypothyroidism include the following disorders.  Take a look at how this happens.

·         Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.  This is a condition in which the thyroid gland becomes enlarged due to goiter.  Due to the sight that occurs in the area, the gland has a lesser capacity to produce hormones.  The enlargement makes it difficult for the thyroid to make hormones that the body will need.  As an end result, hypothyroidism becomes prevalent.

·         Hyperthyroidism.  You might look at this as ironic but yes, hyperthyroidism leads to hypothyroidism as well.  This happens when hyperthyroidism becomes a complication known as Lymphocytic thyroiditis.  The latter is a condition which is characterized by the inflammation of the thyroid gland caused by lymphocytes (white blood cell).  This is usually common after a pregnant woman delivers a child.  This may turn into a normal thyroid state although in most cases, the patient may remain as a hypothyroid.

·         Radioactive iodine or surgery.  These procedures are commonly conducted in individuals with hyperthyroidism.  After the techniques are administered in the thyroid, there is a great chance that the area will be left with little or no thyroid tissue at all.  When this occurs, hypothyroidism becomes existent.

·         Disease in the hypothalamus or pituitary.  There are instances when the hypothalamus or pituitary has their respective diseases to address.  Once these areas are infected by a problem, they will fail to signal the thyroid gland to produce the right amount of hormones needed by the body thus resulting to hypothyroidism.  If the disease is due to the pituitary gland, it is called secondary hypothyroidism while if it is due to the hypothalamus, it is called as tertiary hypothyroidism.

·         Pituitary injury.  This is entirely different from the pituitary disease discussed in the previous paragraph.  A pituitary injury is a result of a brain surgery.  Because of this occurrence, TSH levels are at its lowest which leads to the thyroid glands’ incapacity to produce its own set of hormones.

Some medications may also be considered as causes of hypothyroidism.  If you are taking one to treat hyperthyroidism, there is a possibility that the former will be the end-result. This is especially so when there is too much intake of the drugs prescribed by your doctor.  Remember though that even if there are many causes to hypothyroidism, there is no need to despair as there are treatments to address the problem as well.
