Hypothyroidism Symptoms And Diagnosis

What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism? How will this thyroid disorder be diagnosed? Help yourselves with the answers to these questions by reading this article.

The best way to address a problem is to know its symptoms.  We have heard of this fact so many times and yet we close our doors to possibilities.  If you want to know more about hypothyroidism, it is important to take a look at its symptoms.  Later on, you will also find out how the condition is being diagnosed.

The reason behind knowing the symptoms of hypothyroidism is simple and clear.  The signals are needed for the treatment of the condition.  The problem however circulates on the fact that this thyroid disorder mimics the symptoms of other medical conditions.  Despite this, it pays to gather facts on this disease.

Hypothyroidism symptoms

The most common grounds for hypothyroidism are associated with aging.  In mild cases, people affected by the disease may not show any manifestations at all.  It is only when the sickness elevates to a higher level that the signs become predominant.  Here are some of the signs of hypothyroidism:

·         Common symptoms.  At an early stage, hypothyroidism signs include depression, fatigue, constipation, cold intolerance and sleepiness.  Dry and coarse hair may also be a problem at some points.  Muscle cramps and dryness of the skin is often encountered as well.

·         Symptoms for more severe cases.  If the hypothyroidism had not been detected on its onset, more severe symptoms will affect the body.  Examples of which are puffiness of the eyes, a sudden drop in the body’s temperature or even heart failure.

Hypothyroidism diagnosis

The requirement for diagnosing an individual with hypothyroidism starts when an individual shows intolerance to cold, constipation and dry skin.  In such a manner, blood tests are often required to check on the patient’s case.  Other than this fact, the following techniques may also be utilized:

·         Tests for TSH levels.  In most hypothyroidism cases, the signs do not usually manifest easily.  Even the T3 and T4 levels may appear to be normal.  If this is the case, there is a need to test the TSH levels of the patient.  If the test results show that the TSH level unusually increases, hypothyroidism may be present.  This is due to the fact that it attempts to supplement the loss of thyroid hormones due to the thyroid disorder.

·         TRH tests.  This is used to detect whether the disease is caused by either the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland.  As we all know, if the hypothyroidism is caused by the pituitary gland, there is a secondary hypothyroidism whereas if it is due to the hypothalamus, the tertiary version of the disease occurs.  This test is usually performed by a noted endocrinologist and is done by injecting the TRH.

It is also vital to look into the medical records of the patient as well as to perform the so-called thyroid scan and antibody screening.  Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI could also be of help in detecting the underlying problem in the thyroid area.  Remember also to go to your doctor as soon as you feel recurring signals as mentioned in the hypothyroidism symptoms section of this article.
