Hypothyroidism Treatments: Stressing On How It Should Be Administered

Hypothyroidism treatments come in many forms. To help you see how these medications should be administered, feel free to read along and be enlightened.

In any thyroid disorder, it is important to seek help from the best treatments available in the market or as recommended by your doctor.  You may be required to take these treatments as long as you live.  Therapies and oral dosages may also form part of the solutions for a hypothyroid patient.

With the many thyroid hormone supplements in the market, it is oftentimes hard to detect which will stand true to its word.  Well, no matter what lies beneath these drugs, it is still best to consult your doctor for more effective results.  Let us try to take a look at the hypothyroidism treatments.

Treatments for hypothyroidism

Even the treatments for hypothyroidism have transformed through time.  Previously, the most popular treatment was the so-called desiccated thyroid tablets which come from the thyroid glands of animals.  Today, however, the most famous hypothyroidism treatment is the synthetic T4 more widely known as synthetic levothyroxine.

You may ask why is there an extensive need for a T4 form of treatment than those which contains T3. Well, here are some explanations to this query:

·         Dosage.  Taking T4 is preferably recommended by doctors because of the fact that its dosage is lesser than that of T3.  Synthetic T4 may be taken by the patient once a day only while T3 requires multiple intakes in a day of up to three times.

·         Stability.  The synthetic form of T4 is said to give more stable results to the patient than a T3 supplement which may require longer dosage because of its shorter-acting results.

·         Capabilities.  It had been proven that synthetic T4 may be converted into T3 as soon as the drug is distributed to the bloodstream.  This in turn becomes readily available for the body to use after the body tissues have regulated them.

Here are some other facts on the use of T4 as a treatment to hypothyroidism:

·         Dosage and conversion. An adult patient is given at least 1.6 mcg/kg of T4 a day which is then converted from around 100 to 150 mcg.  For younger patients, larger doses will be prescribed by the doctor.  If a patient is young and healthy enough, full T4 supplementation may be required at the onset of the medication.

·         Effects on existing body ailments.  If a person has heart conditions accompanying the hypothyroidism, there is a tendency that T4 supplementation may worsen the existing condition.  Around 20% of patients have been reported to be affected by this fact.  If older patients are given the T4 supplement, there is a great tendency that chest pain or even heart attack may interfere.  This then requires lower doses of T4 supplements of 25 mcg a day and may be increased after 6 weeks.

It is also important to take the T4 supplement in the morning.  Have your condition checked by your doctor after six weeks to ensure that the TSH levels have also improved for the hypothyroidism condition.  Any treatment which will be more than what is required delivers harmful effects on the person’s body. Osteoporosis and heart palpitations are but just some of the disasters a patient may encounter for wrong administration of the drug.
