Night sweating is the most common condition that doctors hear from their patients. This type of condition is related to too much sweating that happens to most people especially women. It is a kind of problem that is known as hot flushes, or a disorder that is characterized by excessive sweating not because of the hot temperature surrounding the individual but due to some factors that may trigger the condition.

Causes of night sweats

The causes of night sweats vary according to the condition of an individual. The physician usually establishes the culprits in a certain individual by acquiring a specified medical record and series of laboratory examinations. This is to determine if there is a fundamental medical problem that triggers the night sweating of the patient. The most common causes behind the condition include:

·         Menopause. This is one of the most common causes of hot flushes in women. It usually occurs at the onset of the menopausal stage.

·         Idiopathic Hyperhidrosis. This is a kind of disorder wherein the body develops excessive sweat with no particular medical grounds.

·         Infections. Generally, lung problems like tuberculosis are the most usual kind of infection that is connected to night sweats. But there are also some types of bacterial diseases that are linked to the condition. This includes swelling of the heart valves, irritation of the bones because of a contamination and some kinds of blisters. The most dreaded is AIDS viral infection.

·         Cancer. Hot flushes are the initial indication of some forms of cancers like lymphoma. But there are individuals with cancer who experience other kinds of symptoms like excessive weight loss and high temperature.

·         Medication. There are also some kinds of medications that can trigger hot flushes, especially if the signs are not associated to any infection and other medical conditions. The most usual treatment is antidepressant drugs. All sorts of antidepressant drugs can aggravate night sweating.

There are still a lot of drugs that can trigger hot flushes aside from antidepressants. Examples of which include aspirin, acetaminophen, prednisone and cortisone injection.

·         Hypoglycemia. There are times wherein a low level of blood glucose can lead to hot flushes. Individuals who are under insulin or oral anti-diabetic drugs can also suffer the condition.

·         Hormone disorders. If you have hormonal problems like pheochomocytoma, carcinoid syndrome, and high blood pressure, it is most likely that you will experience hot flushes.

·         Neurologic conditions. Exceptionally, neurologic problems can trigger and intensify sweating that may result to hot flushes. These neurologic disorders include autonomic dysreflexia, post-traumatic syringomyelia, stroke, and autonomic neuropathy.

Since hormonal disorders are considered culprit to night sweats, thyroid problems may certainly be one of them. You need to go to your doctor to know whether your night sweats are caused by thyroid health problems or not. Excessive night sweating is not desirable at all especially if it is not yet summertime.
