You may have been informed about how parathyroidectomy is done yet there still seems to be a problem. Your fear is not yet totally erased and you still remain kind of erratic about it. Before you undergo parathyroidectomy, there are several facts you need to establish.
Things you need to know before parathyroidectomy
Relevant to the procedure, you need to know the following things on parathyroidectomy. This will help you gain more strength and know what to expect afterwards. These are just basic things but they are very helpful for your thyroid concerns:
· The procedure. The surgery may take up to as long as three hours. An anesthesiologist is tasked not only for injecting anesthesia but also for monitoring your progress throughout the entire procedure. The surgery is usually done on your doctor’s clinic or at a hospital or surgery center.
· Checking on the patient’s medical background. Your anesthesiologist will also check on your medical background either by making a call to you the night before the procedure will be done or by talking to you the day the surgery will be undertaken. Preoperative examinations before the surgery may also be required a week prior to the process. This will allow your surgeon or anesthesiologist enough time to check into the results of the tests.
· Medication before surgery. Patients are instructed not to take medication such as aspirin around 10 days before the surgery. Aspirin is known to result to more bleeding for the surgery once it has inhibited or proliferated on the body of the patient. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are prohibited as well. Be conscious about buying medications over-the-counter especially those containing either ibuprofen or aspirin in it.
· Pain reliever intake. There are pain relievers acceptable to be ingested by the patient before the surgery will be conducted. The likes of Tylenol are allowed for the patient to get rid of pain.
· Postoperative medication. Your physician may recommend medications after the surgery. The prescription is usually given before parathyroidectomy is conducted or your doctor’s visit prior to the surgery. Antacids with high calcium content are oftentimes prescribed. Take note of other doctor’s instructions regarding this treatment.
· Other concerns. You are not allowed to take in anything by the mouth – whether in solid or liquid form – six hours prior to the conduct of the surgery. Not even chewing gum, candy and water are allowed. If you are a smoker, please put effort to stop the habit.
The above-mentioned tips have something to do with the success of the operation. As long as you follow these things, you will surely gain all positive outcome connected with parathyroidectomy. Do your obligation as a patient if you want the results to be as favorable as possible.
