After-care tips for parathyroidectomy
Going home after the surgery is possible as long as you will be allowed by your doctor to do so. In most cases though, there is a need for an overnight stay in the hospital with the nurses monitoring your condition. If your doctor signals you to go home, make sure someone is available to accompany you in your residence. Here are some other tips you should know after parathyroidectomy:
• Protecting bruises. After the surgery, it is normal if you encounter some bruises or swelling on the neck area. A bandage may be used to protect your neck and may be removed one to two days following the operation.
• Plastic drain. There are instances when a small amount of fluid may be drained from the neck where the incision was made. The hospital staff should monitor this drainage. After instructing you on how to manage the drainage, you may go home as well. Remember not to remove the stitches brought about by the operation.
• Monitoring of blood calcium levels. Expect that after parathyroidectomy, you may experience some drop in your blood calcium level. This is a normal incident for almost all patients. Monitoring of the calcium level is essential several hours or even days after the surgery. If needed, you may be required to take-in calcium supplements for a couple of days or weeks.
• Cleaning the body. After removal of the bandage wrapped around the neck, it is perfectly alright for you to wash the neck, hair and face. Just make sure that you do not scrub the neck area excessively. Likewise, remember to use mild soaps and shampoos.
• Head elevation. Whether you are taking a rest in the hospital or in your own home, it is required that you lie down and rest ensuring that your head is elevated. Use at least two to three pillows where your head may rest comfortably. This will lessen any swelling or numbness on the neck.
You must also watch over the food you eat. A soft diet is usually good enough to supplement your daily needs for a while. Antibiotics may also be recommended. You are not allowed to go back to your regular chores in school, at home or in the office unless your doctor tells you to do so. Even too much pressure on the mouth area may cause some problems if not lessened after the surgery. Any strenuous activities should also be avoided.
