An Overview On Thyroid Cancer: Knowing The Different Types

Thyroid cancer is one of the most threatening disorders that may take place in the thyroid gland. It has different kinds which you must take note of.

Having a healthy thyroid means having a healthy body.  However, there are a lot of disorders attached to this particular gland of the body.  The likes of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are quite popular.  The most crucial thyroid problem you may face is that which they call thyroid cancer.

The thyroid gland is somehow very sensitive in a lot of ways.  The most difficult thing you may encounter when it comes to thyroid health is the fact that most of the times you are not presented with symptoms of the disease present in your system.  Should you have one, the signs may be mistaken for other disorders.

What then is thyroid cancer?

Cancer, in general, is a disease which occurs in various parts of the body.  The real culprit behind the spread of the disease in the body is the cell.  When the formation of new cells happens when the body does not need them, the excess cells form a mass of tissue.  As we all know, cells form tissues which eventually becomes the organs of the body.  This growth is more popularly known as tumor.  Those which develop on the thyroid are called nodules which may later become thyroid cancer.

Types of thyroid cancers

Before knowing the types of thyroid cancers, it is best to classify thyroid nodules first.  Not all thyroid nodules are cancerous.  When this is the case, it is called a benign thyroid nodule.  Otherwise, thyroid nodules can become cancerous or better known as malignant.

Apart from the classifications of thyroid nodules known as benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous), there are r types of thyroid cancer that you should take note of:

·         Papillary and follicular.  This type of thyroid cancer is the most common among cancer types of the thyroid gland.  Eighty to ninety percent of thyroid cancer patients are affected by this type.  It occurs in the thyroid’s follicular cells.  Since this thyroid cancer does not grow speedily, there is a great chance for treatment at its onset.

·         Medullary.  Medullary thyroid cancer begins in the C cells.  Around 5% of thyroid cancer cases take this form.  Take note that this disease should be treated early or before it will even spread to other parts of the body.

·         Anaplastic.  This is the most difficult thyroid cancer case one could ever handle.  Although it occurs least likely in thyroid cancer patients at a rate of 1%, this leads to more problems than the first two types.  Just like follicular thyroid cancer, anaplastic thyroid cancer begins in the follicular cells.  Their difference is the fact that the latter is uncontrollable as it spreads quickly to other body parts without you even noticing about it.

Although the severity of each thyroid cancer differ from one case to another, it is best to always pay attention to the disorder.  The stages are complicated no matter how fast or how slow the cancer spreads to the other parts of the body.  It is important to seek help from your doctor and ask for immediate treatment especially at the onset of the disease.
