Thyroid cancer symptoms may not be too evident at its onset though signs may show up in extreme cases. In this regard, you need to go to your doctor for further diagnosis.
Since thyroid cancer has no known cause, it is also difficult to detect its symptoms especially if the cancer had not spread to other parts of the body. Along this line, however, there are still categorical manifestations which you may take note of if the cancer is already severe. Thyroid cancer diagnosis may also be of help.
Once the doctor had looked into some symptoms which may be associated with thyroid cancer, he does not immediately rule out that you have the disease. It is a wiser step for him to consider recommending tests you should undergo. The result of the diagnosis is an assurance as to your state as well as a mark for the treatment that should be administered.
Thyroid cancer symptoms
As earlier mentioned, symptoms of thyroid cancer may not show on the onset of the disease. If you are already in a more severe stage though, you may feel the following:
• Lump or nodule. Since this is thyroid cancer, the lump or nodule may be located on the neck or near the Adam’s apple.
• Hoarseness. You may also have some difficulty to speak as if no words are coming out from your voice box.
• Swelling. The lymph nodes are usually swollen and are specifically concentrated on the neck area.
• Other symptoms. You may also have some problems with swallowing your food. Difficulty in breathing is a usual complaint of patients. A discomfort either on the throat or neck may also be felt.
Thyroid cancer diagnosis
The above-mentioned thyroid cancer symptoms may also be signs of a noncancerous goiter or other infections in the body. It is therefore deemed appropriate for you to go to your doctor for proper evaluation or diagnosis. The most common tests you may undergo are:
• Physical examination. The doctor feels the entire neck for lymph nodes which may be present in the larynx and the thyroid glands.
• Blood tests. For suspicions on anaplastic and follicular thyroid cancer, the doctor may conduct a TSH test to detect any abnormality in the production of the said hormone. The TSH is responsible for its functions of controlling the growth of the follicular cells. For medullary thyroid cancer, on the other hand, the calcium levels are tested as well as the detection of the altered RET gene.
• Ultrasound. The ultrasound technique helps determine the number and size of nodules present in the thyroid gland with the aid of the sonogram.
• Radionuclide scanning. The thyroid nodules may show up in the area through the use of the so-called radioactive iodine.
• Biopsy. In extreme cases, your doctors may recommend removal of the tissues just so to determine the presence of cancer cells. This procedure is called biopsy.
It is therefore very significant for you to submit yourself for consultation and physical examinations first. You have to entrust your case to your doctor if you want to eliminate the thoughts of thyroid cancer. Be very vigilant when it comes to fighting diseases which may affect your entire system.
