Thyroid Cancer Treatment Side Effects

There may be side effects for each thyroid cancer treatment. Your responses to the procedure may vary from that of another person. However, you are lucky enough as there are ways on how you may get rid of the uncomfortable feeling.

One of the reasons why people turn their backs on possible treatments for a disease is the fact that side effects may exist.  However, you must know that most of these adverse reactions are just but normal.  Let us take the case of thyroid cancer treatments and its side effects.

The side effects of thyroid cancer treatments depend upon which technique is being administered on the patient.  As there are several options you may have, different responses may also be present.  Read along and find out how each technique’s adverse effects vary from another.

Side effects associated with thyroid cancer treatments

As previously discussed in one of the articles for this section on thyroid cancer, there are different treatments for the disorder.  It follows that there are also a wide range of side effects pertaining to the treatment type.  Take a closer look at the following facts:

•    Surgical procedures.  For thyroidectomy and lobectomy, patients will normally feel discomfort and pain.  In some cases, muscles or nerve endings may get damaged.  For such an instance, the voice box may be affected.  The shoulders may also be unbalanced where one may be higher than the other.  Mineral supplements such as calcium may be prescribed after the operation.

•    Radioactive iodine therapy.  Pain in the neck area may also be experienced together with a nauseating feeling and even vomiting.  The mouth area may also turn out to be dry.  In some extreme cases, loss of fertility may be a problem.  Drinking lots of water and fluids, chewing gum, and thyroid hormone pills may help ease all the discomfort.

•    Hormone treatment.  Among all treatments for thyroid cancer, this technique inhibits lesser adverse reactions than the rest.  The most common side effects of this treatment are rashes or hair loss within the first months of undergoing the treatment.  If there is too much intake of the thyroid hormone, possibilities of chest pain may be felt as well as diarrhea and muscle cramps.

•    Radiotherapy.  This thyroid cancer treatment may make the patient feel fatigue inside out.  Although you think resting will be very necessary, doctors will ironically recommend you to undergo some physical activities.  Other side effects of radiotherapy are: hoarseness in the voice; red and dry skin especially in the treated area; and difficulty in swallowing.

•    Chemotherapy.  The side effects of chemotherapy are true to all cancer patients whether one has thyroid cancer or other types of cancers in the body.  The most common complaints heard include vomiting, hair loss, loss of appetite and mouth sores.  There are a lot of medicines which may help you ease this discomfort.

It is good to note that although there are a lot of adverse reactions for each thyroid cancer treatment, there are ways on how you will be able to get rid of these discomforts.  You just have to talk things out with your doctor and discuss how you really feel.  First hand information on how you may counteract the adverse reactions will only come from your doctors.  Be open enough to raise all your concerns.
