The after-care for thyroid cancer treatments involve medical steps as well as support from other people. Take note of how you may be able to regain your life back after the treatment.
If you think that having undergone thyroid cancer treatments will end your responsibility as to your health, well think again. It is always a must that you take steps to take care of yourself after the procedures and during medication. The success of your combat against thyroid cancer happens only if you consider follow-up care.
Your doctors will actually present all the things you need to do after the conduct of the thyroid cancer treatment. You have to listen intently to what he says. Pay close attention to every detail of the pointers he will give you. You may also seek help from other people around you.
Follow-up care for thyroid cancer treatments
The following things are the most common ways by which you may continue to take care of yourself after the thyroid cancer treatments:
• Regular check-ups. Through this follow-up care, your doctor may monitor the progress of your condition. The check-ups will usually involve some more physical examinations, imaging tests and x-rays. Your doctor will talk you through everything including the schedule of the check-ups and the laboratory or blood tests you need.
• Thyroglobulin test. This is regarded as one of the most important tests administered after you have been given a thyroid cancer treatment. The thyroglobulin is what is commonly described as thyroid hormones stored in the thyroid glands. The result of the thyroglobulin test must show minimal or no traces of thyroglobulin in the blood. Otherwise, this means that thyroid cancer had recurred. You are not allowed to take your thyroid hormone pill six weeks before this test is conducted.
• Radioactive iodine scan. This may also be required by the doctor. Just like in the thyroglobulin test, the patient should stop taking thyroid hormone pills six weeks before the schedule of the scan. This technique will help the doctor determine whether the thyroid cancer cells are still present in the thyroid gland as well as other parts of the body.
Support from others after thyroid cancer treatment
It is important for you not to confine yourself within your house thinking that your disease had made you become invalid. You may sometimes doubt of your capabilities to serve your families after the treatment. At some points you may lose your self-esteem. Well, you just have to leave all these worries behind and seek support from other persons like:
• Medical team. Your medical team is more than willing to inform you about things you should do after the treatment. As you discuss things with them, you will also be able to boost your morale and regain your life back.
• Family and loved ones. The support coming from your immediate family and friends is the best thing to get you out of the disorder. Stay closer to them and make it a point to spend time with them more often.
Thyroid cancer is not a communicable disease which one should be afraid of. You should always find ways to be active as possible. You may also join support groups for thyroid cancer. In such a manner, you may share your insights with other individuals who are in the situation as you are.
