How To Diagnose Thyroid Nodules

Aside from looking into your medical history and undergoing physical examination, your doctor may recommend further diagnoses for thyroid nodules. These techniques will help you know whether your lumps are cancerous or not.

There are a lot of ways by which you may be diagnosed of having thyroid nodules.  A regular check-up may be made by your physician usually involving that of the neck area.  You may do the same thing in the comfort of your own homes but it is better to have it administered by an expert rather than leaving your condition to chances.  Remember, not all thyroid nodules may be detected by simply touching the neck.

In the event that you could not detect the thyroid nodules by the mere use of your hands, it would help if you would undergo several techniques conducted in your doctor’s clinic.  The latest innovations are helpful in making you seek proper treatment.  Learn about the different techniques you may undergo.

Doctor’s considerations in thyroid nodule diagnosis

Before you undergo the actual tests related to determining thyroid nodules, your doctor may ask you several things.  These aspects are vital in getting the proper diagnosis for you.

•    Medical and Family History.  During the consultation phase, your doctor may ask you some questions related to this subject.  There are instances when thyroid nodules are caused by the genes passed on to you by your predecessors.

•    Physical Examination.  Standing in front of the mirror and looking at your image may be enough to detect whether a nodule is present in your neck.  Your doctor will then check the nodules immediately after consultation.  If the nodule is immovable, there is a greater risk that it is cancerous.

Thyroid nodule diagnosis proper

To rule out the possibilities of having cancer, your doctor may recommend you for further testing.  The usual processes included in diagnosing thyroid nodules are:

•    Blood Tests.  Blood tests are very important in determining whether the thyroid hormones are functioning at their very best.  The most usual techniques focus on the so-called T3 and T4 as well as the thyroid hormones and the thyroid stimulating hormone.  There are different blood tests to detect each type of thyroid nodule disorder.

•    Ultrasound.  This is one of the most favored ways to evaluate the situation of the thyroid gland.  Through ultrasound, there is a better chance to detect thyroid nodules which you may not easily feel during the physical examination or self-test phase.  It is also responsible for determining the number of thyroid nodules present as well as its size.  In like manner, the test will help you know whether the occurrence is cystic or solid.

•    Radionuclide scanning.  This technique utilizes injecting or oral intake of the radioactive iodine.  This substance makes it possible to detect thyroid nodules with a nuclear camera to take a shot on the thyroid gland section.  This then determines cold and hot spots which is relevant in detecting cancerous thyroid nodules.  When the area is said to be a cold-spot, there is a higher risk of a cancerous situation.

There are other techniques which your doctor may recommend for thyroid nodule diagnosis.  It is important to follow the steps in order for you to see light for your condition.  It will also help you gain further knowledge on the real score behind your thyroid nodule condition – whether it is cancerous or not.
