3.    Age and Gender.  People below 20 years old and more than 70 years old are likely to have thyroid nodules which are cancerous.  Males are more prone to having malignant lumps than women.
4.    Exposure to radiation.  The more you are exposed to radiation, the more likely that you will have a cancerous nodule.
5.    Type of nodule.  With a single nodule present in the thyroid gland, there is a great chance that the sole spot is cancerous rather than when you have multiple lumps in the neck area.
6.    Movement.  A thyroid nodule which is fixed or non-moving is said to be cancerous rather than when it has the ability to transfer from one spot to another.
7.    Gland functioning.  When your thyroid gland functions normally, it is more likely that the nodules present are cancerous rather than when it inhibits multiple functions. 
8.    Diagnosis.  There are different ways by which your condition may be diagnosed such as ultrasound, radionuclide scanning and fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy.  The first two mentioned techniques are good enough though the last one is a better option.  There is a separate section which will tackle FNA Biopsy.
9.    Hyperfunctioning nodules.  Overproduction of thyroid hormones should be treated by targeting on the causes and symptoms of the condition known as hyperthyroidism.
10.    Treatments.  If the nodules are cancerous, it should be treated by removing the lumps immediately in order not to spread in the area.  The more benign ones should be assessed frequently by regular check-ups with your doctor.

These facts summarize the real deal behind thyroid nodules.  You have to remember these things to help you out with your situation.  You do not have to be assessed of having thyroid nodules before starting the act of acquiring knowledge on the subject.  It is better to know these things rather than end up crying in the future.
